Album Review: Various - Songs Of Aloha: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

16 June 2015 | 2:18 pm | Roshan Clerke

"Plenty of simple, elegant, traditional Hawaiian songs are scattered throughout the track list."

The beginning of the official soundtrack sounds like it belongs in a Woody Allen film.

Plenty of simple, elegant, traditional Hawaiian songs are scattered throughout the track list, mirroring perhaps the false impression the film is actually about the Hawaiian people themselves. The music grows increasingly Western after the lovely Kids And Dogs by David Crosby, dipping into obvious ‘70s pop territory. From there, already halfway through the 19-song album, it’s strictly indie songwriter territory. It ultimately doesn’t feel as anchored as Cameron Crowe’s seminal work, possibly a reflection of the film itself.
