Album Review: Various Artists - Late Night Tales: Franz Ferdinand

StarStarStarStar

"Alex Kapranos’ brogue sends us off unto the eventide with a reading of a self-penned late night tale"

Depending on the instigator, the ‘mix’ compilation can either be indulgent divergence from an empty creative tank or a skilful strengthening of a brand. Here, Franz Ferdinand deliver an assured example of the latter, filling a velveteen dancefloor with smartly chosen electro-funk (Zapp), dark ambient (Boards Of Canada) and krautrock (the obligatory Can) in an exhilarating yet smooth ride of genres. Even the well missed Life Without Buildings get a look-see before Alex Kapranos’ brogue sends us off unto the eventide with a reading of a self-penned late night tale.
