Live Review: Triple J House Party: Nina Las Vegas, Flume, Beni

28 August 2012 | 9:33 am | Cara Sayer Bourne

When triple j's House Party rolled into town for a sold-out show at the Hi-Fi, it delivered what was promised – a very good time. The entrance to The Hi-Fi was already crowded very early in the night with people keen to not miss any part of the action. Flume threw out a set of slow, bass-heavy tracks that had the partygoers in a trance. The crowd moved in a wave-like motion, building up the pressure of dancing to go off when Nina Las Vegas brought her trademark set of deliciously mixed tracks to the d-floor. The audience went into a free for all to the sounds of Nina Las Vegas. There was no pretentiousness to the way people chose to dance, as if they had been transported to their bedrooms on a Saturday night listening to the radio. Nina Las Vegas' mix was perfect for the mood of the venue, bouncing between recent hits, classics, hip hop and dance tracks.

With Beni taking to the stage, the party had truly gone into full throttle. In typical house party style it was drawing closer to the end and things began to get a bit loose. Nina Las Vegas encouraged the crowd to jump onto the stage, which many willingly did. It became an obstacle course as keen audience members tried to dodge pissed off security while also jumping the fence and clambering onto the stage to dance with AAA invites. Something about being on a stage makes a lot of people act like they've just racked up MDMA, bringing this burst of happiness and harder dancing to please the crowd.

Nina Las Vegas jumped onto the top of the DJ table and began sexily grinding the air in the euphoria of the gig. A guy in a glow stick suit and mask that tiptoed the line between awesome and creepy created a spectacle of his own, getting onto the stage and tripping the audience out with his movements. Meanwhile, Beni had brought along with him two very attractive male dancers, adding some great visuals to the set as they paraded around the stage. Waiting for tired feet to recover became a lot more entertaining with the two guys outperforming the entire Hi-Fi with perfectly executed moves.

After Beni, much of the crowd left weary but the energy of the house party still remained and was taken to the different corners of the city.
