Live Review: Tkay Maidza, UV Boi

"Loaded with fresh raps and crossing genres, Maidza’s a force to be reckoned with."

More Tkay Maidza Tkay Maidza

UV Boi immediately gets us pumped as he conjures up some seriously grimy beats. His supersonic heavy drops smack us in the face as the bass vibrates through our bodies and energy levels increase tenfold. “You guys can dance, you know?” he shouts out, as the crowd begins to move toward the stage. He taps away at the array of equipment in front of him, mixing stuttering electronic beats, trap rolls and quirky sound effects with iPhone dings. Momentum builds with his hard-hitting style of danceable R&B that penetrates throughout the room. His impressive original tracks Thank U and Ghost, and a set of stellar remixes including a memorable take on Banks’ Beggin For Thread win us over.

The sound of drumming builds excitement to welcome Tkay Maidza to the stage. Bouncing around with explosive energy levels, she begins to stomp her knee-high platform boots to the thumping anthem Brontosaurus. Her infectious energy elevates us as she serves up quick rhymes with nonstop force. Glowing with confidence, she schools us in rapping powered by relentlessly catchy hooks backed by electronic rhythms that pack a punch. The bubbly MC is overwhelmed by her string of sold out shows across the country. These last two shows in Melbourne conclude her national tour in support of new single MOB. Laying it down with a generous amount of attitude on the club-inspired track, Maidza firmly lets us know she prefers, “Money Over Bitches”. Taking virtually no breathers, Maidza’s a hard worker. There’s no stopping her as she pushes the boundaries to the top with incredible drive and her eye on the prize. With a string of hits guaranteed to make us party, Maidza delivers a live show that’ll impress. Guaranteed. Her charismatic personality shines through and we have loads of fun dancing along to her feelgood music.

A self-proclaimed Cashmere Cat fan, Maidza remixes one of her idol’s tunes for us. The beat drops and she dances from side to side, shaking her booty, flipping her hair around and working up a sweat. Maidza throws us back with an old track Handle My Ego before her final encore song, Switch Lanes. Loaded with fresh raps and crossing genres, Maidza’s a force to be reckoned with. We can’t wait to get our hands on her debut album, which Maidza hints is not far off.
