Live Review: The Veronicas, Dean Ray

The Veronicas put on a hell of a show in Perth.

More The Veronicas More The Veronicas

Kicking off the Sanctified Tour in Perth, X-Factor runner-up Dean Ray opened the show on acoustic guitar with Bette Davis Eyes.

The audience was in for an intimate solo acoustic performance with a few interjections about pineapple iPhone cases and big bows, all bringing a fun energy into the hall. He played Coming Back, Budapest and Folsom Prison Blues/That’s All Right Mama, from his self-titled debut album. The crowd was treated to a new song due for release soon called Simple Things, before announcing that he’ll be touring Australia later this year. Ray left the crowd wanting more, as his set had been short but sweet.

A short video of The Veronicas played before the lights went out and the room filled with anticipation for the drape to drop. Then the two petite twins dressed in latex and hoods burst into Sanctified, bringing an incredible energy into the concert hall.

“Perth we really missed you, did you miss us too?” Roar. The twins apologised for keeping everyone waiting six years, very difficult years for them as they questioned their music, their lives and themselves. The industry might have doubted their music but they kept going because of their fans.

The Veronicas played Take Me On The Floor, Hook Me Up, Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were) and Teenage Millionaire before disappearing for a quick change into gorgeous black and white gowns over their latex outfits. Performing acoustic versions of Let Me Out and Everything I’m Not with Jessica on guitar, they went into the beautiful ballad, You Ruin Me, where their vocals killed every note. With another quick change, the twins were back rocking the latex straight into Untouched and Cruel, which had the crowd out of their seats.

After performing 4ever, The Veronicas thanked the crowd, walking off, only to come back for an encore of You And Me after the audience went wild with screams. The twins finished with If You Love Someone, jumping around while waving Sea Shepherd flags before making their final exit. An amazing set from The Veronicas; just like Dean Ray had said, “They’re only little, but they are loud.” Despite a few technical difficulties with microphones and security not letting people stand in the aisles, the show was worth the six-year wait. The Veronicas can put on a hell of a show.
