"The Ivory Lies are here to stay."
It's not super-difficult to find great music places around Perth, but The Sewing Room had a niche little underground vibe that was perfect for up-and-comers The Ivory Lies' launch of their debut EP, Road To Seduction. Everyone was there for the same reason, punters all tucked underneath the grand old building as the basement gave off a dark aura that was jam-packed with fresh, gritty rock and The Ivory Lies rocked the floor from bottom to top, and left us screaming for more.
Support act Legs Electric pulled through their set with a ferocious stage presence that blew everybody in the room away, their strong atmosphere matched only with their heavy rock'n'roll. The lights flashed when lead singer Ama Quinsee smashed insanely high wails while drummer Kylie Soanes and bassist Erin Gooden locked eyes and steady rhythms. The band wooed the crowd seductively, in-sync and showing off songcraft that's reminiscent of the '70s yet still sounded very 2018.
When they finally stepped out on stage, The Ivory Lies proved their budding reputation as one of the must-sees for those who love to rock. The lead vocalist screamed into the microphone, "WE ARE THE IVORY FUCKING LIES!!!" setting off a frenzy that fed off their soaring electric guitar solos and anthemic vocals. The four-piece kicked off with Nothing Left (Not Even Freedom)'s booming riffs, setting a frenetic pace for their set and only slowing down towards the end with Road To Seduction. The familiar rhythms and old-school, new-school rock only seemed like a warm-up at that point and the crowd chanted, "One more song! One more song!" But, as reality slowly kicked in, we realised that was all we were getting. Brief as the set was, it was instantly clear The Ivory Lies are here to stay.
