"Soulful, harmonious exuberance"
The album begins with a swirling synthetic warble. Enter the soulful, wispy voice of Bec Rigby; enter booming four-to-the-floor bass drums, frenetic guitars, tasty synth; enter Rigby again, in delectable harmony.
The opener successfully melds crooning ‘70s soul with modern R&B sensibilities. When the record tries all-out modern R&B/pop, it falters. Here’s hoping The Harpoons continue in the vein of the brilliant Keep You Around, which sounds entirely new, and yet sits nicely between The Ronettes and Aretha Franklin in its soulful, harmonious exuberance.
