Tiny Little Houses are on the cusp of something big. The Melbourne group came together in the mid-2014, and the result has been some of the most gorgeous blends of genres going around right now.
The guys have just put out their debut EP You Tore Out My Heart on Ivy League Records, and it's an oddly gorgeous mix of slacker rock and indie folk created with hugely lo-fi process. If you're a fan of artists like Elliot Smith and Bored Nothing, you'll quickly find solace in these guys.
They've got this eclectic ability to write songs that are heart-wrenchingly emotional, and more often than not, will actually resonate with you.
Joining a slew of other incredible Melbourne artists for the Melbourne Music Week, Tiny Little Houses have a couple of shows coming up so expect to hear some new material from this one of a kind EP.
We grabbed a couple of minutes from the guys to hear what they've been listening to lately. And the results are some incredibly stunning sounds that you can tell have definitely inspired these guys.
Good Morning 'You'
Hazy, sunny, Melbourne slacker pop.
Pure X 'You're In It Now'
Pure X is a mix between the wall of sound of My Bloody Valentine and the washiness of Youth Lagoon, all of their songs are as endearing as they are dreamy with great lyrics to boot.
Bored Nothing 'We Lied'
The short lived project Bored Nothing captures all that was great about Elliott Smith and Heatmister. I want it to come back please, Fergus.
Sebadoh 'Skull'
Ahhh Sebadoh. Harmacy and Bakesale are some of the classic lo-fi albums.. They don't even need an explanation.
Eric's Trip 'Behind The Garage'
Love so much about this band. All these songs are a calculated mess straight to cassette, but it sounds so good.
The Mountain Goats 'No Children'
One of those few really great songwriter bands. Each syllable is dripping in wry poetry about dysfunctional characters caught in doomed relationships. The early albums have sparse instrumentation and were recorded roughly to tape but that only adds honesty to the world's Darnelle creates.
Teen Suicide 'Waste Yrself'
Teen Suicide is one of the many bands that Sam Ray is involved in, but it's my favourite. 'Waste Yrself' is a great album to start.
Foxes in Fiction 'Ontario Gothic'
So dreamy and beautiful, like early Beach House.
Guided by Voices 'Flunky Minnows'
Although their new stuff is a huge jump in production quality, Guided By Voices in the early days were DIY pioneers. My Valuable Hunting Knife and Game of Pricks are all time classics.
Elliott Smith 'Angeles (Live)'
For me, Elliott Smith has been a major influence and someone I binged on for around a year at around 19. He's like an old faithful that you don't listen to every day, but when you go back he always makes you feel the same and its always amazing.
