"Anyone looking for punk rock that wears ‘70s influences on its sleeve could do a hell of a lot worse than Slaves"
To distil Slaves’ debut album to a song, you’d have to pick Cheer Up London.
The sardonic, bratty tune with its “Dead already!” chant chorus has everything there is to love about this new UK punk duo. The song, and the album, features filthy guitar tones and choice riffs over neat, aggressive punk beats. This isn’t to suggest monotony, mind; at a mere 37 minutes, there’s a surprising amount of variation here. Anyone looking for punk rock that wears ‘70s influences on its sleeve could do a hell of a lot worse than Slaves.
