The BREC pulled out all the stops for Fremantle indie-pop band San Cisco'sexclusive one-night-only Out Of The Box + Into The Cube event in an intimate venue. Opening, the extremely talented blues/rock band Third Time Round were followed by fresh, vibrant band Grrl Pal, who set the tone for the evening with their synthy-bedroom-pop set. Jay Le Kat gave a faultless performance, singing with great energy as luminous blue and purple lights gleamed on the stage.
After much anticipation, the
350-strong, sold-out
crowd that had flooded into the smoky, dark room, gave a massive cheer as San Cisco, fresh from recent headline tours of the US and various Australian ports, took the stage and opened with one of their more well-known songs, Golden Revolver. This was the perfect song to get everyone dancing and fighting their way to the front to get as close as they could to the much-loved band. Continuing with their most popular songs, such as Beach and Awkward, which had the audience screaming back the lyrics, the band delivered some of their newer songs, among them Too Much Time Together from their most recent album, Gracetown. As expected there was an encore tradition to uphold, but Jordi Davieson first came back by himself to perform an acoustic rendition of the sad love song, Skool, then, much to everyone's surprise, the band came running back on stage one by one to perform their very last song, Fred Astaire, an immediate crowd pleaser.
Whether 14 or 40, San Cisco have demonstrated their sound has evolved to suit any age, their new material is more complex musically, layered with synth and drawing on more varied genres, building on their previous wildly infectious songs.
