Richard Avedon People

Richard Avedon is one of the most iconic photographers of recent times. His defining style is minimalistic yet powerful portrait photography that has captured some of the most prominent artists, leaders and political activists of our time. Until 17 Nov, the Art Gallery Of Western Australia is hosting Richard Avedon People – an exhibition showcasing some of the photographer’s most influential works from the last five decades. The first along the curated corridor is that of Hollywood starlet Mae West juxtaposed alongside Mr American: both figures highly significant in their own right but not exactly a natural association – herein lies the power of Avedon’s photography. His signature technique is to let all familiar surroundings slip away exposing a raw and genuine moment in time. While perhaps better known for his pictures of celebrities, equally if not more powerful are those of strangers. Some include candid shots at Santa Monica Beach, Louisiana Hospital and in New York City, as well as young children of Avedon’s Western Project and former slaves. To appreciate the real power of Avedon’s work is to acknowledge that the subject’s notability isn’t the important factor but the emotions and motives he has managed to capture. Richard Avedon People showcases the diversity of people and their unique, individual narrative.
