Album Review: R. City - What Dreams Are Made Of

"This is definitely a pop record first and foremost."

"If Biggie was alive you'd probably hear him on this," announce Virgin Islands duo R. City at the top of their debut album What Dreams Are Made Of - and it's about as bold as hip-hop boasts come.

Good thing, then, that the track that follows is Locked Away featuring Adam Levine, easily one of this year's best pop songs. The reggae/dancehall influences on that song are more pronounced on the album, though this is definitely a pop record first and foremost. Purists might object, but when you have additional catchiness in the form of Checking For You, Take You Down and the Akon-hooked conscious rap of Live By The Gun, who really cares?
