Live Review: PREMIERE: Tobacco Rat's 'Convulsions' takes footwork inspired sounds to the underground

The rat is BACK! And he's bringing some industrial footwork inspired sounds with him. He's recently relocated to Melbourne from Perth, scuttling his way across the country and in tow, he's got his second EP.

Aptly titled Component V2.0, the EP will be out this Friday and features two already released tracks. But what about the other two, you might be saying? Well, you'll have to wait until tomorrow to hear the full EP, but alas! That's right, we've got a grimy new number to share with you today courtesy of TOBACCO RAT himself.

'Convulsions' is the title of this one and it's rounding out the EP. Of the single, he says that this is "My first proper dive into the world of footwork inspired beats. This track came about from an electronic hip hop beat I had made with a Roots Manuva acapella on top. Heavy resampling experiments created those rhythmic synths at the very start which gave birth to this new direction of the track."

It's frenzied, but in the most organised, chaotic kind of way. The track is absolutely mad, but it's executed so excellently and logically, it's really satisfying to listen to. It's calculated and fast, and does what Tobacco Rat does best: take unique samples from the world around him and place them within the context of his project's narrative.

With every release, Tobacco Rat's proving himself to be a future bass heavyweight, not only within Aus, but within the wider context of the genre itself. The sounds he's put together on this EP make for something terrifying and ultimately thrilling, which is I think why we're always left wanting more.

Tobacco Rat's Component V2.0 EP is out tomorrow through Trench Records.
