Live Review: Onra, Kit Pop, Charlie Bucket

The Frenchman weaved through a set containing nu-disco stylings, ‘80s flare and of course a significant amount of that almighty hip hop.

More Onra More Onra

Despite the five degree weather, Onra fans gathered at The Bakery this past weekend to watch the Parisian beat maker, and out of this world producer, come alive on stage. Opening the show, DJ Charlie Bucket worked the crowd with his set of funk-infused throwback tracks. Bucket kept the medium-sized crowd in the party spirit with his upbeat set, as he does best. Even those who were brave enough to sit around outside were tapping their feet.

At around 11pm Kit Pop took the stage. Playing a 90-minute set, the Perth DJ/producer worked the crowd in true Kit Pop fashion. Sticking mostly to his own production, we heard remixes of artists such as Missy Elliot and Danny Brown. As the DJ's set came to a close, his mobile DJ set-up - evidently on wheels - was pushed back to make way for the main event. Quite amusing to watch.

As the lights were dimmed and the majority of the crowd moved towards the front – aimlessly pushing and shoving those around them to get a look at what was happening on stage – Onra proceeded to set his MPC and other equipment up on the larger table provided for him. Even a small fan was set up on stage behind the French mogul. Also amusing.

At this point, the venue was well and truly packed out (at least indoors anyway). Opening with remixes from what must be a significant Vietnamese vinyl collection (makes sense, considering he has Vietnamese ancestry), Onra lured his adoring fans in. It was different, but different is not necessarily a bad thing. From that point forward, the Frenchman weaved through a set containing nu-disco stylings, '80s flare and of course a significant amount of that almighty hip hop.

Stand-outs included Onra's own tracks Long Distance, After Hours, Keep On Loving Me, Wonderland, VBB and, the crowd favourite, One Of Those Nights - which the Parisian producer remixed for Juicy J and none other than The Weeknd. Onra also threw in some ODB, unreleased Tittsworth and a classic from The SOS Band.

Closing his short set, Onra treated his fans to his super hit The Anthem, at which point Perth producer Ta-ku joined him on stage. The two then closed the show with an encore performance of The Anthem, much to the crowd's delight.
