Album Review: Nneka - My Fairy Tales

Stereotypes of reggae music tend to encourage connotations of relaxation and detachment rather than the musical form’s background in socio-political protest and spirituality. However, Nneka finds solid ground for her new musical direction with her latest album. My Fairy Tales finds the German-Nigerian singer’s faith permeating the songs beyond mere tropes of positivity as she counts her blessings on Surprise and prays for her persecutors on Pray For You. While her soulful touch has been substituted for Afrobeat rhythms, her songwriting thankfully remains the same.
