It's a steamy Tuesday night and a crowd mills around the Northcote Town Hall to see Nelly Thomas, the proud Reservoir resident – the 'Paris end' of Ressy, that is. Her show tonight is all about “things that give you the shits, but there's something nice about them”. She used to be a lesbian (which is a “Resvian” if you're from Reservoir, and a “Nesbian” if you're from Northcote, FYI), but she gave it up because she “just didn't have the time”. Her classic stand-up show covers the topics that keep her up at night: everything from politics, sex ed and refugees, to whether the lemons she sees on the ground were injected with cyanide by a serial killer. But most of all, her show is a very clever explanation of politics, which she first got into in primary school – along with Pippa Italiano and twins Narissa and Marissa – and she effortlessly makes this serious topic very, very funny.
