Album Review: Milk Buttons - Songs For My Butcher Bird

"The songwriting is poetic and delicate... and the album takes you on a journey through the storm and into the sun."

More Milk Buttons More Milk Buttons

Milk Buttons describe themselves as 'experimental dad rock' and despite not being 100% sure what that means, whatever they're doing, they're doing it well.

Their debut EP Songs For My Butcher Bird is a lovely piece of art, and impressive for a first release.

The EP flows beautifully like a perfect story, commencing with the spacey Another Night. The standout song takes form in the heartbreakingly beautiful Most Of The Time, perfectly flown into from the sounds of rain and wind from the thrashy and crashy Flowers, it's a beautiful break from the distortion and reverb, to a simple love song.

The songwriting is poetic and delicate ("If you were a wattle tree / Would you feel the ants on your branches?") and the album takes you on a journey through the storm and into the sun, making you feel refreshed and ready to take life head on.
