Live Review: xxyyxx 'Zygote'

Sampling Mary J. Blige's 'Family Affair' and turning it into more of a club affair, this is xxyyxx's latest single 'Zygote'.

Marcel Everett aka Florida-based producer XXYYXX has dropped his latest work 'Zygote' and continues to remind all that he's achieved more than many of us ever did at 18.

Whilst his early days may have provided the atypical backstory of a 'bedroom producer', Everett has since been jet-setting and mixing sets across the globe, with Australia as a pitstop earlier in the year for Laneway Festival and a Melbourne sideshow.

Now he is back on listeners' musical radars with his bootleg single, overhauling Mary J. Blige's 'Family Affair' and turning it into more of a 'Club Affair'.

Whilst 'Zygote' opens on Blije's soulful melismas and ever so smooth phrasing, XXYYXX is quick to point out that he's in charge here, as the tempo dial is turned up and launches into a frentic merry-go-round of synth play, filters and warbled, snappy rhythms. Don't get too caught up in a dance trance with this though, as you'll be very abruptly left hanging at its mere two minutes and 38 seconds duration.
