Not to be confused with the Australian tennis star of similar name, SAM STOSUUR is a Brisbane multi-instrumentalist and producer influenced as much by jazz as house. His history in multiple bands spanning genres, the influences of classical and avant garde beats shine through in his own work and on his debut EP Dunlop Molley, out now on Bris imprint, Beats Of No Nation. This blend of influences is clearest on 'Rainbow', a track that reshapes these inspirations into a fresh new take on house music conventions.
The classic four to the floor beat is reinterpreted from the start with syncopated claps and stuttering synths that slowly evolve into funky triplets and improvised drum loops. A pitched down sample repeats, providing a warmth alongside bubbling brass and delicate synth fills. Every melody and beat is layered with precision, building a cozy track with a multitude of intricate elements that reveal more of themselves with each listen.
Meandering directionless trumpet and synth melodies bloom and shift across the track, proving that even as a house muso Sam Stosuur still vibes that jazzy improvisation. Across 'Rainbow' and the rest of Dunlop Molley, his classical music training and multitude of disparate influences reveal themselves in his unique, forward thinking style of production. This shift in the electronic direction came after he bought some new tech, as Stosuur explains, "After acquiring an MPC, Juno, Arp Odyssey and various other pieces of gear, I dove deeper into the world of synthesisers, sampling, and production - the end result was my debut EP."
