Sydney producer and vocalist RAINBOW CHAN has just released a new single from her new EP Fabrica, a collection of five tracks that explore the fabrication of self and society. 'The Creator' is a minimal yet powerful rallying cry against preconceived notions of gender roles and sexuality.
Her usual offerings feature swelling soundscapes and echoing synths but 'The Creator' is far more sparse, leaving room for the weight of her lyricism. Sequencers and drum machines provide an endearing backdrop for Rainbow Chan to express her frustration at double standards when it comes to sexism and heteronormativity.
Over wistful chords she draws from her own experiences and those of women, trans and non-binary friends in their belittling interactions with men, and channels them into emotive pop. This track balances emotional intensity with a radical softness in the delivery, as scattered drums and distorted fills echo Rainbow Chan's powerful message.
She articulates the concept best herself, saying of the track: “Every time a woman is interrupted, undermined or silenced by a man, our cry becomes stronger. We don’t need your validation or your weak regurgitations of things we already know. Of course, these gendered relations don’t fit neatly into a binary and I extend this message to include trans and non-binary individuals around me. “The Creator” was written for us: to disturb the norm, to give us a song to sing when our confidence falters, and to lay down the loam for us, and only for us, to bloom.”
