Sydney dance music pioneers SIDECHAINS have just released their second international cosign for this year, a track from mysterious Texan producer PRYLENE. Their sound is frenzied and hard to pin down; blending rubbery kicks, sweet pitched up vocals, large harsh stabs and poppy chords. Prylene has been working away for some time, with this being their second official release alongside a few mixtapes. This year seems to be their time to shine with the release of 'Race' signifying big things to come for this anonymous producer.
This track is an experience of opposing forces, with Prylene's delicate sugary vocals floating over a menacing instrumental and huge dissonant synth stabs. In the verses, the track is a little more paired back and ambient to highlight the rap style vocals which quickly shift to looming breakdowns that feature terrifying dense synth crashes.
These synths, as varied as they are, from the twinkly sounds backing the verses to the pounding stabs of the breakdown, all sound hand-tweaked, bringing an element of DIY to a pretty polished track. For a song that is so computerised, Prylene has managed to still maintain humanity in their music through the vocals and synth work, bringing that self described "manufactured organic" feeling.
Prylene is a completely unique artist, drawing from acts on the PC Music roster and many online circles surrounding the cult label, but bringing a totally new vision. Everything sounds purposefully constructed and tailor made for the project, creating a niche that is all their own. If it's a 'Race' then Prylene is the only competitor.
'Race' is out now on Sidechains and available to buy, stream or free download!
