Sydney house duo Night Tales have dropped their sophomore single 'Back 2 Me' a retro-tinged house banger with some emotion behind the scenes.
Kamaliza and Third Floor (aka Aaron Bannie) are accomplished artists in their own right; it's when they combine, though, that magic truly happens. Meet NIGHT TALES, a Sydney-based project between the two that - if their latest cut, 'Back 2 Me', is anything to go by - is slated for huge things this year.
The duo generated some serious heat with their debut 'Move You' towards the end of last year; a warm, halcyon take on house with a generous helping of more modern deep house that served as one hell of an introduction to their craft. With 'Back 2 Me', they've truly outdone themselves, creating a house banger worthy of every dancefloor.
According to the group, their main aim is a focus on songwriting, chord progressions and lyrics. Right out of the gate they prove themselves on 'Back 2 Me'- from the bright synth hook, blaring bassline and half-step hats, there's plenty to get stuck in your head. The vocals and lyrics, rather than being a filler element like it can be on house tracks, actually serves a purpose and tells a story of a strained relationship.

Where I feel 'Back 2 Me' is unique in terms of house music is how tight, almost claustrophobic the mix is. Every element - from the vocals, the drums and the bass - is loud and proud, close to being overwhelming but just backing off. That said, some elements sound detached from one another; the vocals in the chorus, for instance, seem totally independent from the instrumental. The result is a tumultuous, introverted house track, an almost oxymoronic sound but one that the duo pull off without a hitch.
'Back 2 Me' is a catchy house cut with some emotion lurking in the basement - the fact that it works so well is a testament to the skill present in Night Tales. Be sure to check them out at the dates below to dance your butt off to this banger.
