'TTYL' is a hazy ode to the 80's yet progresses towards the new, it's Morabeza Tobacco's debut single into the world of music.
Inspired by Paris Hilton's "unnecessary" need to shorten words, ‘TTYL’ deepens the shallowness, the track’s theme one of difficulty to communicate. With likeness to such artists as HOMESHAKE, The Babe Rainbow and Ariel Pink, the duo’s funk-pop style creates an endearing and fruitful listen, stemming its likability from its subtle bass line and poignant melody.
The despondent vocals create a nostalgic atmosphere with supporting backing that reminds the listener of wide landscapes and setting suns. In a way it’s an ode, the 80’s peaking its head through the space-like instrumentation and electric guitar, but it is also a progression through to the new.
Vanilla and Gustav, the dynamic pairing behind Morabeza Tobacco, have found the right balance between loose-fitting and tightly knit. The track is effortless yet focused at the same time. They come into an era popular but wanting of dreamy pulled-back pop and with their introduction bring a twist of something new. An EP is expected of the duo later this year and already, with various mentions across numerous online music forums, no doubt it will be more than well received from critics and fans alike. More to come from Morabeza Tobacco soon.
