MINA has always been an artist that celebrates the sounds of different cultures, turning her love of dancehall and UK funky into future facing polyrhythmic club tracks. Recently she's pulled inspiration from Africa, teaming up with Ghanian vocalist BRYTE for 'Make Money'. The track was recorded earlier this year in Accra, and sees the duo bring their respective hometown flavours of UK funk and azonto to create a solid collaboration.
Starting off with a syncopated percussion line, the track slowly introduces Bryte, dropping a few improvised quips to the beat before confidently launching into his rhymes. The beat is sprinkled with short sharp melodies, as the simple but effective flute melody and bass interplay.
In classic Mina style she takes the conventions of a genre and makes them her own, this time reshaping azonto rhythms, a style of dance music popularised in Bryte's Ghana. As the track builds it becomes more dense with her unique markers, her ear for percussion, marimba style synths and flute melodies being the stand outs.
This track is so full of energy, with bongos and cowbells abound and polyrhythms so layered that at least one is bound to get you locked in and bopping your head, then your whole body. Bryte's infectious enthusiasm runs through the track, as he delivers his skippy rhymes and colourful improvisations with as much exuberance as the beat. Through this collaboration in 'Make Money', Mina has brought the sounds of Ghana to clubs all over the world.
