If a 16 year old Brisbane girl describes herself as the “Hannah Montana of rap”, is this in anyway shape or form OK? The answer as it would turn out is yes. Said 16 year old goes by the persona MALLRAT, and has given a new meaning to a rap/electronic blur with her debut ‘Suicide Blonde’ produced by Tigerilla.
Naming the track after the iconic INXS track ‘Suicide Blonde’, the track's inspiration takes on a dark side for a girl of only 16. Mallrat tells in part the stories of problems with addiction, depression, and suicide of someone close to her, who happens to be both blonde and one of the girls featured in the original video clip, giving the song a double meaning.
Mallrat has a dark voice, which in moments sounds briefly feminine before busting into rap. The lyrics are both clever and punchy. You can hear the dark story, but the tune itself gives the track a more upbeat vibe overall. There are hip-hop, pop and electronica influences, ‘Suicide Blonde’ is impossible to define with one genre.
‘Suicide Blonde’ has been gaining traction with Triple J Unearthed. While Tigerilla has been called in for production duties, Mallrat is actually a producer herself, which means big things will be coming out of her in the near future. Keep an eye on her Soundcloud for what comes next.
