Beautiful Small Machines took on an M.I.A. track and won. This quirky little cover takes 'Paper Planes' to a place no one ever expected.
When an indie/ folk band covers one of the most popular pop/ hip-hop songs in the last five years, it is approached with equal parts suspicion, humour and interest. Is it too soon to try and remake a song that has been so incredibly popular and overly saturated?
It appears not. The new take on M.I.A.’s 'Paper Planes' is actually quite refreshing and very down to earth. Replacing synth beats and samples with guitar leads, organic drums and banjo, BEAUTIFUL SMALL MACHINES actually make this cover work. Sure, I was definitely longing for the gun and cash register samples and the song has no edge whatsoever, but hey, it’s not trying to. They’ve taken a massive hit and made it completely their own. Plus they also have a quirky, cute as film clip to seal the deal. Check it out below.
