Melbourne producer LEWIS CANCUT has been honing his sound since his signing to NLV Records about a year ago. He's taken his tropical sounds and given them a synthetic spin, incorporating wild samples and rubbery bass lines while maintaining that familiar bounce. With a little help from vocaloid Hatsune Miku, 'Plastic Games' builds from the sounds of his last EP and gives us his most succinct vision yet.
Lewis Cancut has such a knack for creating really interesting synths sounds, and has kind of become his trademark. Bringing wobbly bass lines and almost percussive main line synths on this track, all his sounds are totally separate from each other but always sound related.
Of the track, Cancut has said he made it "without depth, from nothing but hard reflective surfaces" but instead of feeling abrasive, the juxtaposing sounds of the off key hits and the sweetness of the vocals give this track warmth. If this track had cheeks, you'd probably want to pinch them.
The computerised pipes of Hatsune Miku float perfectly over the abstract soundscape, in this duo's second collaboration. Her vocals are a perfect addition to the track, their airy feel and unexpected pitch shifting is the cherry on top of this fun, idiosyncratic tune.
'Plastic Games' is out on NLV Records and available to dl or stream now. Let's hope we hear more boppy stuff from Lewis Cancut over the rest of the year, or that he drops some unreleased goodies at his upcoming slot at Splendour In The Grass.
