Live Review: Grooves & philanthropy combine on Ken Oath Record's ‘Frog in a Sock’ compilation

Ken Oath Records have released new compilation album, ‘Frog in a Sock’ while partnering up with very important Indigenous cause.

Ken Oath Records is a Sydney based record label, focussed on showcasing Australia’s growing dance music scene in combination with contemporary jazz and Balearic styles. Starting up in 2017, 12 prolific underground releases have been released from a diverse array of exciting Australian producers. On Monday, Ken Oath Records released their compilation, Frog in a Sock and not only does it act as a perfect representation of the label's creative direction, but also contributes heavily to a very important cause.

The compilation is available on Bandcamp as a ‘pay what you feel’ download. Coinciding with Reconciliation Week, all proceeds from the sales of the compilation will be donated to the Dr Tracy Westerman Aboriginal Psychology Scholarship Program. This will aim to equip the next generation of Aboriginal psychologists by providing training in Indigenous specific mental health treatments and suicide prevention. Dr Tracy Westerman’s work spans over 20 years, and operates in a diverse set of fields in relation to Aboriginal issues. You can learn more about the specific work of the scholarship program here.

Frog in a Sock takes a track from each of the labels releases, and features a unique set of sounds and artists. The tracks move from ambient jazz to housey dance cuts effortlessly, creating a coherent vibe despite 12 separate artists contributing to the compilation. There are a multitude of highlights on the record.

Donalds House’s 'Aquarian Dream' is a slow building atmospheric house masterpiece. Its wooden percussion, moody synths and groovy bass line create for a jungle like transporting experience. Roy Batty Jr’s 'Ode To Jode', while working in a completely different direction, adds to the journey as equally. Its rapid drum and bass style drums in combination with spacey, whirling synths create an out of this world vibe.
