Live Review: Hoodboi & Tkay Maidza absolutely soar on 'Glide'

'Glide' is only a further cementing of Tkay Maidza's status as Australia's most versatile hip-hop artist, and Hoodboi keeps her afloat effortlessly.

TKAY MAIDZA is unequivocally one of the most exciting artists Australia has delivered in the 2010s. Her unshakable work ethic, electrifying stage presence and incredibly natural versatility has lead her to master realms of pop, hip-hop, electronic and everything in between. As we wait for the follow-up to her 2016 debut album, she's been peppering us with a diverse range of collaborations, and the latest - the HOODBOI-helmed 'Glide' - sees her show off all the tools in her belt.

With a sound reminiscent of KaytranadaHoodboi gives us a soothing, funk base that Tkay Maidza hops on with ease. Making a name for himself with his 90s throwback mantra that seems familiar yet foreign, Hoodboi's understated production seems both cafe and club ready. It's a breezy melody that incorporates elements of both house and R&B but blends them together beautifully. It's a summer ready jam with an explosive bass line, but gives Maidza the centre stage she's earned.

Her switching between airy vocals and spitfire raps is something that certainly isn't new for her, but we've never seen it done so rapidly as with 'Glide.' The melody, which Tkay Maidza was born to float on, allows her to give us a breathy and restrained choral delivery. But the way Hoodboi charges energy in the verses leaves plenty of room for Tkay Maidza to unleash her rapid-fire raps that the world has come to love her for.

'Glide' is only a further cementing of Tkay Maidza's status as Australia's most versatile hip-hop artist, and Hoodboi keeps her afloat effortlessly. The switch between breezy melodies and a thumping bass line keep this song exciting and unpredictable, and at this point, we're unsure Maidza would hop on anything less.
