It's one thing to be able to tackle one genre and its conventions convincingly, yet still managing to be original, but it's another thing altogether to be able to fuse two opposite sounds together to create something cohesive. This is exactly what HAAN808 has done with his new track, and he's teamed up with UK's The Citrus Clouds for it too.
'Your Time' is the first taste of what we can expect to hear from the New Zealander's forthcoming EP. The artwork is super apt too, done by Sydney producer AYWY.
The track itself works hard to use percussion in ways that are unconventional, yet still work together to make it sound like a hip hop track. The juxtaposing elements of the ambience makes the hip hop aspect sound incredibly full and ready to burst.
It's epic in its delivery and something totally refreshing against the current electronic landscape. You can see where they've drawn elements of sound from (I can definitely hear tinges of Flume running through), but they've really honed this in with such specificity that it emerges as something expansive and concrete in its delivery.
HAAN808 is making electronic music that challenges notions of what it means to be a producer. They've drawn elements from genres that usually would not sit with each other due to their varying levels of energy, but they've worked hard to make the sound work and it's totally refreshing.
