In 2017, it's truly difficult to be shocked by a sound. You can really think you've heard it all, just in different versions. In walks GRASSHOPPER, however, and all that is blown well and truly out of the water. Brought to our attention by the legend that is SHAMIR, Grasshopper is an artist in the truest sense. Releasing a three-track EP, titled Grasshopper Is Your Friend, on Shamir's "unofficial" Soundcloud label, Grasshopper is clearly not here to play games and is clearly one that everyone should keep their eyes on.
While tracks 'Ham Hocks and Collards' and 'Grape Crush' are stunning, ethereal and certainly give a clear sense of what Grasshopper is all about, they simply don't compare to the harrowing beauty that is 'Can't Swim With You.' It begins sparsely, as Grasshopper's fuzzed out vocals begin to float whimsically to the forefront. The hypnotic instrumental never once submerges the gorgeous, woozy vocal performance, but the whole track will have you drowning in ecstasy. This song is a lo-fi pop moment that evokes the same energy that Shamir executed with surprise sophomore album Hope.
It seems like now more than ever, music is our route to escape an otherwise bleak and melancholic world. And if you're looking for a new escape, Grasshopper is your friend whose music is a refreshing reminder that things aren't all bad.
