Nineteen-year-old singer songwriter Grace Hughes from Byron Bay has just come out with a stunning, club-ready electropop banger which will have you wanting more. ‘Habit’ is a straightforward, unabashed pop song, with excellent production from award-winning producer Jean-Paul Fung (Silverchair, Birds of Tokyo, Client Liaison).
With a sound that recalls Peking Duk’s hit ‘Fake Magic’ from earlier this year, Hughes exudes a seductive confidence on this track, singing in sultry tones about what we can only presume is an old lover who wants to win back her heart. She can’t seem to shake them off though, ‘I can’t break this habit / I can’t break this loop,’ she sings.
Opening up with the lyric, 'I've been locked in this cage for so long / Tied up to the chains of love', the song eventually blooms into an easy-listening, feel-good chorus. "The song itself began while we were sitting having lunch at Balmoral Beach and trying to get warm in the winter sun," Hughes has said. Her voice glides over the song's bouncy and catchy beat, arriving at a heavily warped bridge which provides an interesting counterpoint to the rest of the track.
With more music on the horizon, we've got high hopes for this rising young star.
