Melbourne drummer turned singer-songwriter/producer, G-FLIP, uploaded her debut track 'About You' to triple j Unearthed yesterday, and within a matter of hours, it was quite literally the talk of the country. It's now been played on triple j's Good Nights and has won her rave reviews on the triple j unearthed website and for good reason. It's hard not to be impressed, and once you've had a listen, you'll understand why.
'About Me' is essentially a song about complicated emotions and feelings of love, of the aching and longing variety. Lyrically, it's built on tradition but it has all the key sonic ingredients of a great pop song. For one, it's intensely personal and intimate, with G-Flip addressing her ex-lover directly. Her voice is shot through with nostalgia and longing; she pines for 'the old days'. It is not exactly clear here whether she is speaking from personal experience or from the point of view of someone decidedly older and experienced, as she sings about 'living off these pages' as if she is wise and old beyond her years. It hardly matters though, not with a debut song this good.
G Flip has an exquisite voice and reveals a keen sense for pop phrasing and storytelling. She has a superb way with melody, and every time she runs across a repeated phrase, she’ll approach it differently. Her crescendos take you on a journey, making you feel the intensity of her feelings in every note. The song's multiple vocal layers intensify the sense of nostalgia, while the anthemic rush of the drums bolsters its emotion.
Apparently, G-Flip was holed up in her bedroom for the best part of 2017, and now we know she was simply busy crafting bangers. This is a stellar debut, and I simply can't wait to hear more. Watch this space!
