Sydney born, London based producer DRELLER (aka Thomas Rawle) has just dropped 'Shape of Love', his first track in two years. It's the same blend of warbled neo-funk with a crisp electro-pop shell we know and love, with a fresh coat of paint.
DRELLER burst on the scene in 2016 with 'Control' and 'One Night Stand', two singles that introduced us to the densely packed, hook filled goodness of his music, and the hypnotising visual accompaniments he animates himself. After touring Australia and Europe and remixing 'How Do You Do It' by Empress Of, he's been hard at work crafting some new tunes, the first of which is 'Shape of Love'.
Mastered by Matt Colton (FKA Twigs, James Blake, Flume), 'Shape of Love' is a track filled to the brim with sounds an ideas that never once gets overwhelming. With a run time just under five minutes it constantly moving, switching between sections of soft vocals and subtle synths, to an assault of booming bass, guitar and a sea of vocals. It's one of those sounds that's hard to describe; the best I can compare it to is two Jamiroquai songs playing at the same time in a drain pipe, in that it's a neo-funk jam simultaneously dreamy and catchy.
Special mention should go to the entrancing visuals for the track, once again animated by DRELLER. According to him, it ties into the universe portrayed in his videos for 'Control' and 'One Night Stand', that features its own mythology and stories. As the first taste of new music to come from DRELLER, 'Shape of Love' is exactly the kind of bold follow up we expected.
