After two years on the sidelines though DJ Boring is back, announcing his new four-track EP 'Like Water' out on Ninja Tune's Technicolour
It's rude to call DJ Boring a lo-fi house producer. Despite his lo-fi beginnings and breakout hits, Tristan Hallis has proven he is a versatile all encompassing dance making machine. His sets include rampaging 90s rhythms, rave centric heaters and his last effort on wax, 'For Tahn', proved Boring as a prolific producer with journey-like house ballads. , Now, after two years on the sidelines, DJ Boring is back and has announced his new four-track EP, Like Water, out on Ninja Tune's Technicolour next month.
With the announce he has given us its title track, 'Like Water'. Fit for the times, it's far from a straightforward, crowd pleasing club tool. The track is percussive heaven. Colourful synth lines build towards an all encompassing dream-like state. As all the elements combine, the bass line in full force and the kick slapping the percussion stands as the highlight. Beautiful in its melodic nature, it features rhythms at the front making this thing so bloody magical. The vocal sample also enters the arena, adding a unique sonic depth to its barebones structure.
In a statement Hallis said, "Although created for the live show I wanted this EP to be more than club tracks and have a sense of fun to it," and that it is. This is more than just a track to be played live, its a strong sonic statement from one of Australia's most exciting and underestimated producers.
