Does CHARLI XCX ever disappoint? The answer is no. She’s been dropping massive dancefloor bangers non-stop over the past year and a half and her latest single ‘1999’ featuring Australian pop angel TROYE SIVAN is absolutely no different. The track has been highly anticipated by fans after being debuted at an intimate listening party back in June. After a short demo had been leaked last month, the collaboration was officially announced on Tuesday and it’s safe to confirm that ‘1999’ was definitely worth the wait.
‘1999’ is the bubblegum bop of our primary school disco dreams. Imagine iridescent lights bouncing off a shimmering disco ball, as girls dressed in glittery halter tops and low-waisted flares and boys with their bowl cuts dance along to these sugary sweet synths. It’s a meta-pop throwback that channels the infectious energies of the Spice Girls and Madonna, whilst making sneaky little references to icons such as Britney Spears, Eminem, Michael Jackson and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Charli XCX and Troye Sivan both reminisce the golden memories of their childhood years as they sing, “I just wanna go back, back to 1999, Take a ride to my old neighbourhood. I just wanna go back, sing, 'Hit me baby, one more time'."
The irresistible hooks and playful, feel-good soundscape, embody the classic elements of every iconic pop song of the ‘90s, undoubtedly becoming a clear contender for the song of the summer. Charli XCX remains to be one of the most innovative artists at the forefront of modern pop music and this track proves that her avantgarde popstar status isn’t going anywhere.
