Melbourne producer and songwriter BLYOLK (‘bloke’) has released his third single offering, ‘Shun The Sun Because I Don’t Breathe Youth’.
The 20 year old artist (also known as Bastian Chesney) fuses psychedelia, gritty rhythms and a warped idiosyncratic aesthetics.
Blyolk’s production propagates a variety of lo-fi textures and quirky tones, utilising sporadic sampling, loops and layered vocals to procure this ravishing, weird pop creation.
Blyolk’s previous singles ‘Artshole’ and ‘Don Wowry’ had a pretty killer reception from the Australian scene, with Chesney drawing on his previous performance experiences to also curate an utterly mesmerising live set.
Opening with an oscillating, warbling, synth-sounding guitar and candid vocals, ‘Shun The Sun Because I Don’t Breathe Youth’ quickly drops into a funky groove, with crunchy beats and a judicious array of instrument tones yielding Blyolk’s signature sound. The combination of spoken and sung lyrics radiate his virtuous character, and add further substance to the nuances of the track.
Chesney says, "I don't so much as sample from other places, but make loops/samples that sound like they're from a variety of sources including saxophone, mellotron and acoustic guitar. This song is about [a] person finding new confidence in themselves, breaking out of your shell and learning to love again."
