AMATEUR DANCE is the latest Melbourne producer to come out of absolutely nowhere and smash it with just a couple of tracks under his belt. With only one song to his name, THE FADER recently tracked him down to see what his deal was and he responded by spewing out a couple new treats that were just as good .
With the kind of airy blissed out vibes most house producers seem to have left behind in the nineties, funky bass lines they've been trying to recapture since the eighties and samples ripped from the darkest recesses of YouTube (or even Seth Cohens favourite band) this is dance music that exists without a place or a time.
Homeless, but still dancing.
The vocal samples are what really ties the EP together; "*giggles* my life isn't that interesting" is the kind of honest refrain that will resonate with the hoards of ravers filling the smoke filled basements that this song is likely to invade.
'Still Amateur', despite the titles insistence, is by far the most danceable track of the three with an insistent beat that's never gone for long and some genuine hands in the air synth stabs. On the other hand, 'B Tru 2 U' is more suited for the long walk home than the dance floor.
Not as instantly groovy as his first two tracks it draws you in slowly as an unevenly paced monologue tells a story of hopelessness as it slowly develops into acceptance and finally happiness, the kind of late night train of thought that we often endure through some inebriated introspection.
The floaty synths and skittering hats glide endlessly over the Moroder like arpeggiating synths that throb in and out as you listen to what could be the diatribe of a struggling artist, a lonely soul who's just found 'home', many things but always someone who surely just, someone who needs to dance.
