"Dripping with orgiastic levels of psychedelic funk fusion and soul."
Koi Child are dripping with orgiastic levels of psychedelic funk fusion and soul on their self-titled debut.
A kick-arse horn section, riveting bass lines, dancing keys and energetic, punchy drumming form a bedrock for Shannon Cruz Patterson to wax lyrical on. The first act of the album is progressive and mellow, rooted in jazz and afrobeat grooves. The second act is urban and nasty, epitomised by the wave-making single Black Panda. Koi Child's dynamite execution of their music shows that the hype is absolutely authentic. Producer Kevin Parker should have used this drum sound on Currents though.
