In these days of apps making bedroom recordings sound akin to Abbey Road, circa 1970 (with orchestra), True West sounds like a garage with a microphone gaffa’ed to the roller door.
That’s testament to the participants’ deliberate primitivism. The eponymous Kim is Salmon (Scientists, Beasts, etc.) – to hint to the attitude, while Leanne Cowie’s drumming is the complementary racket of toys being flung from the pram. He yells like a man shitty with the world, rather than that fancy-pants ‘angst’ stuff. So Naïve, as one song has it – but perfectly raw with it.
