Live Review: Kilter, Alta, Feki

Villa Nightclub hosted a thumping evening as supporting acts Alta and Feki served to hype up the crowd. Before the main man took to the stage, his fellow EDM musicians created a club atmosphere as the crowd grew bigger and time ticked on. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the floors and the walls of the club while white and yellow flashes of lighting provided stunning visual accompaniment, which shined with an intensity that equalled the music. The slow and enriched bend of underlying bass samples by duo Alta provided a nice build-up and the futuristic synth-fuelled tracks by Feki set up an atmosphere right on time for the whole house to thump energetically. Feki played his last song Run Away before announcing that "Kilter is coming up next!"

As crowds and clubgoers watched 11pm slowly tick closer, it was Kilter - a Sydney-born electronic music producer and beatmaker - who would steal the night with a combination of performance prowess, multi-instrumentality and the drive to outperform the other acts on the bill. 

Stopping in Perth to promote his acclaimed debut album Through The Distortion, Kilter stepped on stage to ridiculous fanfare as the DJ delivered music that sounded tasteful and upbeat in the club. Armed with nothing but his drumkit and guitarist Tim Lockwood, our hands were already in the air. As we cheered Kilter's name as he screamed, "You guys are making me feel right at home right now, Perth!"

Kilter's flying limbs gained momentum as he kicked it off with Ritmo, the first track from his debut album. The lighting effects punctuated Kilter's drops and brought on the euphoria of EDM heaven as his setlist flew by and he delivered song after song from Through The Distortion. Kilter went on to perform Shatter, dropped a drumstick and picked up another right on time, without missing a single beat. He then apologised for his (apparent) tiredness, explaining he "woke up at 6.30 in the morning", but the appreciative and adoring crowd carried on raving as he continued to rip through his set.

"Thank you, Perth! You have been the best crowd so far... Have a good night!" Kilter exclaimed, eliciting cheers from all corners of the room.

"One more song! One more song," we chanted before the stage lights illuminated and Kilter jumped back out to perform They Say (yet another stunner). A completely immersive experience during which electropop beatheads galvanize, danced, drank and celebrated to Kilter's killer beats.
