Kara Schlegl Is That (Kind Of) Girl

StarStarStar

"Her stories are tight and packed full of amusing one-liners."

If you're looking for a conventional stand-up show, Kara Schlegl's storytelling hour isn't for you. She sits on a stool behind a mic reading off her notes.

Her stories are tight and packed full of amusing one-liners, traversing subjects as varying as teenage pashing, her vagina, the whiteness of her skin, and the comedy community's problem with sexism/sexual violence. They felt true, and they were certainly funny, but they don't feel like enough to keep us in thrall for an hour.

Bish Marzook and Bridie Connell took turns at the mic too. The theme of the night is ostensibly judgement, Marzook's story about fluidity and definition gaining a few deserved titters, and Connell's story of high school rebellion inspires a few roars of laughter.

A laidback storytelling evening.
