Working through his life events like chapters, he reenacts out anecdotes about his childhood, experiences of homophobia, and his relationship with his first love.
Set out like a cross between a play (fake mini-interval included) and themed stand-up, Joel Creasey's The Drama Captain is a story of love, heartbreak, disappointment and self-acceptance. The 22-year-old recounts two of the greatest tragedies in his life: auditioning for an important role in a high school production and getting dumped by his boyfriend of three years. Working through his life events like chapters, he reenacts out anecdotes about his childhood, experiences of homophobia, and his relationship with his first love. He uses sarcasm, bravado, self-deprecation and campness to hilarious effect, with some brilliant moments being throwaway lines and under-the-breath catty quips. A simple glare or grimace induced hearty laughs from the crowd; Creasey's timing, despite his tendency to talk at breakneck speeds, is impeccable. The Drama Captain is a cleverly-written, heartfelt and hopeful show with laughs out loud at every turn.
