Words like 'crafted' and 'polished' come to mind. You can decide whether such descriptors are positive or negative. They namecheck Midlake and Bright Eyes as what's being aspired to, but the distance between – the songs largely created with the main participants in Brisbane and Melbourne – often seems reflected in the music. While all the parts are there, it sometimes just seems not to fully connect. That said, House Of Cards is fine mainstream of the alternative fare, while the closing Cincinnati has more cross-currenting textures, and might be the better for it.
