Album Review: GUM - Flash In The Pan

"It feels like The Flaming Lips' occasional detours into soul and R&B."

Flash In The Pan isn't quite as abrasive or exciting as GUM's prior efforts.

The solo project of Tame Impala/POND multi-instrumentalist Jay Richardson, previous GUM albums were loud, funky things full of lo-fi beats, psychedelia and fragmented ideas. Flash In The Pan, while clearly of a piece with those albums, is significantly more sedate. At times, it feels like The Flaming Lips' occasional detours into soul and R&B. There are some great songs (If You're Gonna Love Again) - but too often it just feels a bit dull. Best see for yourself if it's for you.
