The first instalment of our Five Years Of Astral People collaborative series comes from selectors Winston Surfshirt with their birthday party playlist.
Praised for their innovation, skilful scouting and profound passion, Sydney touring and management collective, ASTRAL PEOPLE, are just about ready to celebrate their fifth birthday.
What started as an idea that struck in a pizza shop late one evening, Tom Huggett, Leron Danilewitz and Vichara Edirisinghe took little time in putting their words into action. Filling up their own pool room with trophies that reflect half a decade of hard work paid off, the crew can boast touring over fifty international acts (Stormzy, Shigeto, Freddie Gibbs, xxyyxx), the launch of events Outsidein, Summer Dance and Witness, and the management of a super creative and dynamic artist roster including the very talented Roland Tings, Collarbones, Rainbow Chan, Polographia, GL and Dro Carey.
Celebrating in the way they know best, Astral People will blow out the candles of their happy birthday cake surrounded by friends and fam in Sydney on Saturday, 22nd October at Oxford Art Factory. With help from a bunch of pals that have contributed to the shaping and representation of Astral People's ethos, expect both live and DJ sets from the likes of Wave Racer, Baro, Winston Surfshirt, The Posse, Andy Garvey, Cliques and more.

To aid our anticipation of such a milestone event, some of the aforementioned artists have hit us up with their perfect birthday playlist - limited to just five songs. Proving that less can most definitely be more, the first taste comes from Sydney five piece, Winston Surfshirt.
Despite being the new kids on the Astral People block, the gentlemen certainly feel at home, and have proven to be rather tasteful selectors. Take a read at what they've chosen and why, below.
Luther Vandross ‘Never Too Much’
"Such a tune! Cant go past Luther. Dat Bass Ooooh! Gotta be the party starter. A million days in your arms is never too much. Stop it Luther."
Delegation ‘Oh Honey’
"Can't remember how I found this tune but seriously one of my favourite songs to listen to, so chill. How it isn’t up there with Mayfield and Marvin, I don’t know. That production as well? Dang, would love to sample it but I'd prefer not to ruin this one for me. You’re welcome party."
Fatlip ‘What’s Up Fatlip’
"So much love for Fatlip, easily one of my favourite rappers. This tune is easy to listen to, his lyrics are so simple and honest, kinda nostalgic and sad, but the music is real euphoric and childish with those kids toys. Spike Jonze respect."
Brandy ‘I Wanna Be Down’ and/or ‘Baby’
"Tunes… Just dope tunes, if I had to choose one I wouldn’t and I’d play both."
Flying Lotus ‘Do The Astral Plane’
"FlyLo is king and this is probably his most normal sounding tune to get down to without breaking brains. Vincent Price. Fin."
