Album Review: Eliott - Bold Enough

Charlotte Gemmill, aka Eliott, is only 21 but her mastery of the subtleties of pop shine on her debut EP, Bold Enough. She’s accompanied by piano and synth for the most part, with jazzy guitar kicking in on the last track, and it suits her - her voice is soothing, emotion-filled and tightly controlled. Backing synth and beats are provided by Sydney electro musician and producer Jack Grace, and they’re never overpowering, preferring to showcase her impressive vocals.

Gemmill’s lyrics show a thoughtfulness that reveals a musician who’s put work into their craft. “I just want to smoke and you hate that I smoke so we’re stuck again”, she croons on So Tired, and the simplicity of the words make them relatable to anyone of any age. Her songwriting abilities are on show here, and if they’re anything to go by, she’s destined for pop-ballad stardom in the vein of James Blake, Adele or Florence Welch; which is an impressive feat for a debut, and for someone so young. If this is her still figuring it out, as she sings on the first track, then expect big things from her in the future.
