Elements

16 February 2015 | 2:11 pm | Thomas Munday

"One of modern circus’ most technically precise and spiritually enlightening journeys."

Elements by Western Australian dance company Natural Wings is a visceral and eclectic sensory assault. Fringe World’s Big Top can barely contain this out-of-this-world spectacular.

The humidity rises steadily as eager crowd members pack the expansive venue. Two performers, Dawn Pascoe and Ruth Battle, engage in a sensual, succinctly choreographed dance. The mating-ritual-esque dynamic explores the bonds of humanity and wonders of Earth within limited space.

Sand, water, and powder are strewn across the arena while the Indigenous score builds tenfold. Pascoe and Battle’s intimate, sensual performance then takes to the skies. The aerial stunts – utilising the trapeze, hoop, and rope – display these performers’ immaculate skills. The dynamic aerial artistry, coupled with their innate chemistry, delivers an intricate visual spectacular. Elements is a Fringe World highlight, and one of modern circus’ most technically precise and spiritually enlightening journeys.
