Review: ★★★★½ Double Denim Adventure Show (MICF)

16 April 2018 | 4:22 pm | Joe Dolan

"A wild and ridiculous ride."

Philosophers and deep-thinkers rejoice, as Double Denim are here to answer the age old question: What if Aunty Donna and Broad City got dissolved into the Gilligan's Island canon? And yet, the answer is even weirder than you could imagine.

The hive-mind antics of Michelle Brasier and Laura Frew make watching Double Denim Adventure Show an exercise in comedic dissection. It's near impossible to determine what's planned and what's improvised, but, in all the confusion, the duo never forget to make their crowd howl with laughter. Their story of a cruise gone wrong may sound familiar, but Frew and Brasier take that staple and bend it in hilariously incomprehensible ways.

Though Double Denim may act like a couple of underprepared loons, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Both Brasier and Frew are masters of timing and improv, making the tech hiccups some of the funniest moments in the show. It's as seamless as it is silly (honestly, who thinks of using a sneaker as a torch?) and the two create bizarre and accessible characters along the way.

Slapstick, absurdist, sketch and some truly jaw-dropping musical moments, Double Denim have all the trappings of the next big comedy duo. They get the crowd on their side in a heartbeat and take us on a wild and ridiculous ride. And hey, who doesn't love an acrostic poem dedicated to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson?

Double Denim Adventure Show plays till 22 Apr at Belleville, part of the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival
