Playing in support of his recently released self-titled album, David Mercy (aka David Sofield) was greeted by a full house at Ellington Jazz Club.
Backed by his impressive band (bassist John Wilson, drummer Angus Diggs and the inimitable Lucky Oceans on pedal steel), he embraced what was already a warm and friendly atmosphere - set by opening guests Billie Rogers & Friends - and took to performing some very heartfelt tunes. As an audience member one could not help but feel engaged and somewhat energised by Sofield's storytelling style, reminiscent of Paul Kelly, but by example only and certainly not by template.
The gig was the second of Sofield's March shows at Ellington and it certainly gave off the feeling that it was something special, as he touched hearts and warmed the house, with both songs and memories that we could all take home.
